Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore was established in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, with 180 students and 3 programs. Today it has evolved into a deemed to be University with over 40,000 students, offering 47 Undergraduate and 46 Postgraduate programs and having 17 schools in two campuses. VIT Chennai was established in 2010 and has since become a beacon of excellence in higher education.
VIT is focused on providing quality education and is engaged in transformative research. It offers Bachelors, Master’s and Doctoral level programs in diverse areas including Science, Engineering, Humanises, Life Science, Agriculture, Law, Fashion, Architecture, Hospitality, Design and Management. VIT has established 22 research centres, 11 in Vellore and 11 in Chennai, in almost all frontier areas including Biotechnology, Nano technology, Climate change and Data Science.
The Directorate of Rankings and Institutions of Eminence (IoE) at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is committed to enhancing the university’s reputation. We focus on implementing quality measures that improve VIT’s standing both globally and nationally. Through strategic initiatives and continuous evaluation, we strive to position VIT among the leading educational institutions.
VIT has grown as a leading Educational Institution in India. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited VIT Vellore with CGPA of 3.66 on four-point scale at A++ grade. VIT Vellore has been ranked among the Top 20 Universities in the country consecutively since 2016 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Government of India. In NIRF 2024, VIT is ranked 10 the University category, 13th under Research, 11th under Engineering and 19th in the Overall category.
VIT is also ranked high globally. In QS World University Ranking by Subject 2025, VIT is globally ranked at 142 in the broad subject area “Engineering and Technology”. In the same ranking, in the subject areas Computer Science and Information Systems VIT is ranked globally at 110 and in Data Science and AI VIT is ranked in the bracket 51-100.
In QS World University Rankings 2025 the University is ranked in 791-800 band. In Shanghai Ranking of World Universities 2024 of VIT Vellore is in 501-600 rank band.
As a testimony to its commitment to green initiatives, in QS Sustainability Ranking 2025, VIT is ranked at 396 in the world.
76 Professors of VIT are among the Top 2% Scientists in the world according to the study conducted by the Stanford University, USA in 2024.

- Data Collection: Gathering institutional data required for various Rankings and Institution of Eminence Project.
- Data Analytics: Analysing performance metrics to assess institutional standing and identify areas for improvement.
- Data Submission: Compiling and submitting data to national and international ranking and other agencies such as NIRF, AISHE, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education (THE), Shanghai Rankings, and US News.
- Institutional Information Services: Serving as a central hub for ranking-related information, providing insights and reports to support strategic decision-making.
