Innovative Techniques

Innovations by the Faculty in Teaching and Learning

  • Effectiveness in Teaching can be achieved by understanding the models of instructions that capture, explain and transfer the knowledge from faculty members to the learners. These involve a deep understanding of subject matter, planning, classroom instructional strategies, assessment of understanding of students and analysis of learning outcomes.
  • The faculty, towards inculcating innovative means in Teaching and Learning are clearly elucidated both in our records and in the Institute website for peer reviews and critiques. Our methodologies are open for enhancement. The following are the Innovative Techniques used by the faculty members in the Teaching and learning process:
  • LMS – Moodle
  • MS Teams
  • Flipped classroom
  • Experimental Learning
  • Cooperative Learning
  • Participative Learning
  • Smart Boards
  • Innovative Assignments
  • Industrial Visit
  • Project based learning
  • Value added courses
  • Virtual labs
  • Industrial Internship
  • Technical Quiz

A. LMS

An online learning management system called moodle is made available to all the teachers and students, using the link https://lms.vit.ac.in/login/index.php which facilitates the teachers to upload their class notes in electronic form. Teachers make use of this portal to schedule assignments and different types of quiz using this portal. The submission of project reports for project-based courses is also carried out using this portal. Students are encouraged to submit electronic copies of their lab records in portable document format for evaluation with the VTOP link https://vtopcc.vit.ac.in/vtop/initialProcess. This portal is maintained by the software development cell of VIT Chennai. The complete E-record for a specific laboratory course will be available in electronic form for access within the institution. Faculty member configure the mark entry for the experiments, assignments, quizzes, continuous assessment tests and Final Assessment test using the VTOP login.

B. MS Teams

A digital repository of class room lecture notes prepared by faculty members are saved in MS teams. Moreover, It is helpful to conduct online classes, Quiz, meetings and polling.

C. Flipped classroom

Faculty members are encouraged to video graph their class room lectures with the support from VIT School of online learning and present the same to their class students and the other subsequent sets of students who are taking the same course. Students review lecture materials at home and engage in interactive, problem-solving activities in class.

D. Experimental Learning

Engaging students in activities that involve real-world tasks or simulations relevant to the course. Students can be performed with new experiments related to course content through Learning by doing method.

E. Cooperative Learning

It involves students working together in small groups to achieve learning goals. Students learn from the cooperative activity, such as understanding circuit design, improving teamwork, or applying theoretical knowledge to practical problems.

F. Participative Learning

It involves students in the learning process, making learning more interesting and enjoyable. The students have been involved in group discussions, project discussions and team work.

G. Smart Boards

Instead of the conventional blackboard teaching VIT Chennai has groomed its faculty members to make use of smart boards and make use of different digital pads for their teaching and learning.

H. Innovative Assignments

Assignments are given based on the real-time engineering problems, to help students to understand and come out with the solutions. Group assignments are also given to improve the self-learning and encourage the team work of students.

I. Industrial Visits

Industrial visits are organized for students by the faculty to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical training in a real-life environment. Students understand the industrial practices and organizational hierarchy during industrial visits. Industrial visits provide opportunities for active/interactive learning experiences outside classroom environment in addition to usual classroom learning

J. Project Based Learning (J Component)

As a part of our continuous efforts to groom our students, the Department frames its curriculum in such a way that students acquire the skills to design and create complex Electrical products through various activities including projects

K. Value Added Courses

Certification courses are conducted by department to give key knowledge to students in a specific field. It improves the employability skills and promote professional and life-oriented skills of the students. It helps students with better preparation to meet industry demands as well as develop their own interests and attitudes

L. Virtual Labs

Students can access virtual labs from anywhere, making it convenient for remote learning and accommodating different schedules

M. Industrial Internship

Students get exposure to academic environment which is different from their future work environment, viz. industry, wherein they are expected to be placed.

Figure 7. Snapshot of Industrial Internship Review

To get this exposure, Students are encouraged to undergo four weeks of industrial internship in a reputed industry in their respective discipline of study, any time after their first year of study. Industrial Internship evaluation committees review the students learning, report along with a completion certificate(s) from the Industry where they had received the training, and award marks.

N. Technical Quiz

Instead of giving regular assignments to theory courses faculty members schedule their quizzes through LMS.
