Introduction  

The School of Bio Sciences and Technology at Chennai campus offers undergraduate programme in Biotechnology. The uniqueness (USP) of this programme is to produce biotechnologists required for industry 5.0. The curriculum accommodates courses in various disciplines of Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management, thus providing a platform for the holistic development of the student. The embedded laboratory component in all the courses in the programme core enables students to gain hands-on experience in the fundamental biotechnology tools. In addition, the inclusion of project only courses in the curriculum enables students to involve in multidisciplinary projects, which aims at either process or product development. The projects also expose students to unsolved industrial as well as societal problems and inculcate critical thinking as well as problem solving capabilities through the application of advanced technologies in biotechnology. As part of the curriculum, it is mandatory to intern either in industry or research laboratories (either within India or abroad). The programme also provides a strong foundation in programming which is required for the analysis of biological data. Based on the requirement and interest, the programme provides options for the students to concentrate on any of the domains / allied areas like biochemical engineering, plant biotechnology, animal biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, computational biology, environmental biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals, omic technologies, and bio-entrepreneurship and regulatory affairs. This paves way for gaining in-depth knowledge in the chosen domain. The state-of-the-art research facilities at the school provide opportunities for the students to get involved in research activities along with the faculty members. The programme provides opportunities for industry and research engagement, through visits to industries and research laboratories, hacks-a-thons, and other technical events / co-curricular activities.
